From Lord Howe island in Australia, and introduced to the halls and courts of Europe by intrepid explorers and botanists, this plant is a true style chameleon.

From Georgian grandeur (a sensation when introduced from as far back as 1770) to 1980s Loft-living: the Kentia is a model palm for home cultivation.

An elegant, arching and airy palm with graceful stems and the potential to reach 15 metres in its native land (don't panic...they will grow happily, and far smaller, in your home).

A bright spot away from harsh direct sun will suit this palm. Tolerant of semi-shade, too, where it will potentially slow its growth rate but still be quite content.

Give moderate amounts of water and a nutritious and well-drained substrate for this palm.

Care tips

The top 4-5cm of the substrate can dry between waterings. Check weekly (get your hands dirty…stick a finger into the pot) and if the top of the substrate feels dry, then it’s time for a drink.

Fertilise regularly using a balanced feed to supply the energy this vigorous tree demands. Prone to bugs such as Scale and Mealy bug, check the leaves regularly.
